Quotation Marks

Quotation Marks

Quotation Marks (" " ' ')

Direct Quotations

Quotation marks are used primarily in direct quotations. Put quotation marks around the exact words of the speaker.

Example:
1. Jimmy called, "Anyone for tennis?"
2. "I would rather play golf." replied Lee.

Note the punctuation for these direct quotations:
  • Use a comma before the direct quotation.

  • Use quotation marks around the speaker's exact words.

  • Use a capital letter for the first word of the direct quotation.

  • Use a period and a question mark inside the quotation marks.

3. "But, Linda," he said, "you and Cheryl have never ridden on the colosus"
4. "You go ahead and ride on it," she answered. "We'll stay here and watch you."

Note the punctuation for these split quotations:
  • In 3, the word you begins with a small letter because the words on either side of he said are he two parts of a single sentence.

  • In 4, there are two sentences. The first one begins with you and ends with she answered. Therefore, the W of We'll is capitalized as the first word of the second sentence.
